Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8
Paul is making a comparison/contrast between the flesh and the Spirit. It’s not difficult to see that they are polar opposites of one another.
There are times that we “drift” in and out of the flesh and Spirit, perhaps even on a daily basis. Like Paul wrote in chapter seven, we know what we should be doing but there are things that prevent us from doing what is the best.
The important thing to note is that at any point in our walk with Christ we can be governed by the Spirit. We don’t have to wait until evening or until we’re in the mood, but we can pray to ask the Holy Spirit to wash over us like a flood, and He will do just that.
More often than not, we get in the way when the Spirit of God wants to move in our lives. We resist and cajole and make excuses, but the bottom line is, we can be as close to God as we want to be.
