When Paul wrote this, the church was still very young. The leader in each church was probably doing everything. He might have had lay help but there didn’t seem to be a formal structure. He trusted Titus to take care of the elder situation. I’m certain the pastors during that time were relieved that they were getting formal help. Now, there would always be problems with this method because now the preachers had to contend with elders in the church. That’ why what follows these verses gives very clear qualifications for becoming an elder. The qualifications were designed to weed out new Believers or people with significant moral deficiencies.
This morning as you consider this verse, pray for the elders in your church. Their jobs are often weighty and they generally don’t get paid to take some of the brunt of complainers and agitators. Pray for their families as the elders could be working long hours away from home.
