8 The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. 1 Thessalonians 1:8-10
Many have joked that Salvation is “fire insurance.” In other words, it will save you from hell with the lake of fire and brimstone. Yes, there is that element to it, but that’s just the beginning. If you recall, when Jesus died on the cross, the wrath of God was poured out on Christ. We can’t know in the least bit what that meant. We do know, according to texts such as this, that the wrath of God is coming. We don’t know when, where, how, or to what extent. Non-believers joke about hell being a place they can be with all their buddies. Wow, that’s dangerous thinking.
We know about the wrath He poured out in the days of Noah. We know about the wrath He poured out on Sodom and Gomorrah. And we read about some of the wrath He’ll pour out in the Last Days. It will not be pretty. It will not be fun, and it’s certainly nothing to joke about.
We can take comfort, however, that we were rescued as Paul wrote. Undeserving as we were, He rescued us because He delighted in us. Psalm 18:19
