15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 2 Peter 3:15-16
At first consideration, the phrase “our Lord’s patience means salvation” doesn’t make a lot of sense. Peeling it back a bit, though, we understand that God is giving people more time to repent and come to Christ. In our patience – or lack of it – we would want to destroy the evil in this world and call it a day! Enough is enough!
But God is infinitely patient. He wants more and more people to believe. And I’m sure He wants more of us to bear witness to that salvation. The new heaven and new earth will come about soon enough. There’s still more work to be done.
