What Are You Working For?

The laborer’s appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on. Proverbs 16:25

What are you working for? Now, I realize that there are people reading this that do not have work, and I’m not minimizing that but I’d like to take us beyond that. Again, what are you working for? A paycheck? Peace of mind? Food on the table? A roof over the head?

The generation that came before us never thought this was an appropriate question. They worked for 30 years for a company, retired, enjoyed retirement, then passed on. They didn’t have particularly lofty goals in their work except to “bring home the bacon,” so to speak. Being fulfilled or satisfied in their work was not in their vocabulary. They just did it to put food on the table. Granted, some probably were extremely good at what they did and some might have even enjoyed it but for the most part, they worked for a paycheck.

We live in a very different era, though the question can still be asked, “what are you working for?” or “what’s driving you every day?” or even the familiar “besides the paycheck, what makes you get up every morning?” Is there something outside yourself that you’re working for? Undoubtedly, the proverb writer said it best, “his hunger drives him on.” Answering the questions in this paragraph could explain a lot of things in your life if you’re willing to examine it.
