16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled.
17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. Exodus 19:16-19
In dramatic fashion, the Lord called the Israelites toward the mountain. They knew something big was about to happen. They knew they wouldn’t be able to see God. Just reading this, though, you can feel the tension as they approached. At first it was a loud trumpet sound and then it got louder. Then the mountain shook. Unfortunately they’d only get a second hand account of what God had told Moses, but they would be there to experience everything surrounding it.
As the digital age continues to expand with artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and questionable bioethics (editing human DNA or Crispr), we get a sense that something big is about to happen in the spiritual world. When man started cloning experiments on animals (Dolly the Sheep in 1996), I believed that we weren’t far from the end. It was as if a mountain was shaking before us. We didn’t know what it meant at the time, but something big was on the horizon. It’s only gotten worse.
Certainly something big is on the horizon for Believers. We may have to live through some dark times to get there, but it awaits us, much like the Lord waited for Moses to make his way up Mt. Sinai.
Take heart and be of good cheer.
