Softening Hearts and Opening Eyes

24 But the word of God continued to spread and flourish. Acts 12:24

What is it like living in a society where lives are changing all around you every day? That’s the type of society the disciples lived in, and in fact were the catalysts for. Obviously the Holy Spirit had been softening hearts and opening eyes for years, but it took the courageous and bold telling of the Gospel story for the message to sink in. They were not alone because the Holy Spirit was also giving them courage to say what they needed to say despite the persecution they would receive. So they had the Holy Spirit working on both sides of the equations: the preachers and those who heard.

Twenty-five years ago I found myself in a similar situation in Mongolia. The Communists had beaten down the people for several decades. Nobody knew even the simplest of Bible stories. The Gospel message was as foreign to them as the people delivering the message was. Like the passage above, the Holy Spirit had been drawing people to himself. And He had been drawing us to go to tell them. How could we possibly lose!?

Never underestimate what the Holy Spirit can do in the lives of unbelievers when He is drawing Believers to deliver the message. We may not see this kind of growth in the United States, but it’s certainly taking place in parts of Asia, Africa, and South America.
