Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2 Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves God is known by God. 1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Go to any university in the world and you will find some very haughty, intellectual snobs. They believe by their higher learning that they are far superior to those of us in “fly-over country.” They love to hear themselves speak in class and in the media when called upon.
But their knowledge is empty. They have degrees up and down their arm but they believe their knowledge will rue the day.
Paul warned against such puffery because he himself was an intellectual and a scholar. He knew the trappings and hollowness of raw knowledge.
If you know someone in college, pray for their discernment. College professors, as a collective group, are not known for their faith in God. In fact, many are hostile to Christians in their classroom. Pray that these students will be able to stand tall in the face of angry, Godless professors. Pray that their faith will shine through the darkness.
One response to “Intellectual Puffery”
So true brother, so true. The elites like to look down their noses at the every day ppl. Thankfully Paul had walked in both worlds, so he did not retain the same attitude as them. I love your devotionals!
