A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool. Proverbs 17:10
We know by experience that this verse is true, but why?
When I was in school I was a class clown of sorts. I’d crack jokes whenever I had a chance just to be funny, often just for the attention. One day a substitute teacher stopped me dead in my tracks with these words, “I don’t know who you are, young man, but some students in this class are trying to learn. I will NOT allow you to interrupt those who are trying to learn. Is that clear?” What could I say? All the other teachers either tolerated my poor behavior, sent me out of class, paddled me, or sent me to the principal. But this man gave me a stern rebuke that 30+ years later I still remember. I was in his class on other occasions, and you can believe me that I was his model pupil.
At the time I did not realize the impact that one simple rebuke would have on me. I don’t remember much about school, especially inside the classroom. I do remember his words and the forceful tone he used.
Pray for the children in your life, be they kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, or others. Pray that their hearts and minds will be open to truth, and that the light of Christ will shine upon them. Pray that God will give them grace in their studies and as they begin planning for the future.
