Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” John 6:28
This same question has been asked a kazillion times or more since it was first asked. People, in their own way, want to know how to be in favor with God. It is a basic question but the simplicity of it should not be disregarded. When people ask this question, it’s because they are searching.
Some are searching for the quickest, easiest way to get to heaven – the shortcut, so to speak. Yes, they are truth seekers but they may not like the simple answer you provide them with. They don’t want it to be THAT easy (little knowing that “believe and receive” goes far beyond those words when they are put into practice).
The other category of seekers will ask this question in twenty different ways or more, trying to figure it out intellectually and rationally. This may even be the person’s first real encounter with a Believer. Laughing at or mocking objections – no matter how silly or insignificant they seem – will only result in a lost opportunity. We have to meet people where they’re at, and if it means answering questions about UFOs or dinosaurs roaming the Earth or evolution, we should give the best answer we know and gently lead them to the cross.
Their path always will frequently intersect with the cross. What they do when they get there is entirely their decision. Leading them to it is a noble task indeed.
