Another Potato in the Pot

9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

1 Peter 4:9

As has been stated elsewhere, the reason Peter (and others) wrote about a specific behavior is because that behavior was not being practiced.

Hospitality is one of those “services” that some are more suited for than others. While that may be true, we are encouraged to do what we can with what we have.

Hospitality helps people and it helps us. You don’t have to have much to be hospitable.

I recall many years ago a couple I knew in the Air Force would invite all the single airmen over after church. It was a standing invitation. Looking back at that I got a chance to see this verse in action. They weren’t the wealthiest because they had four children of their own, but they opened up their homes to me and many others. They set the standard in my mind for hospitality. Their attitude was almost literally, “We’ll throw another potato in the pot. Come on over!”
