3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Psalm 100:3
Was it intentional that the Psalmist equates us with some really dumb animals? Jesus did the same thing later in the New Testament. Or are we to understand it metaphorically, that God is our shepherd – the focus being on God and not His people?
Both are probably accurate portrayals. If you think about it, we are not as smart as we think we are and we are easily led astray by other desires. Robert Robinson said it best in his hymn:
“Prone to wander,
Lord I feel it.
Prone to leave the God I love.”
Of course Jesus is our Good Shepherd, and He knows how to lead us. We would do well to follow Him as often as humanly possible.
He can be trusted.
