Believing His Brother

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter). John 1:42

Peter, the Rock, is called out by name by Jesus. I can just imagine Peter just staring at this man, wondering what it all meant, wondering why his brother would be so excited about the teaching of a mere man. But his brother said that he had found “the Messiah.” It wasn’t something he nor anyone would say lightly. If Andrew was correct, it was the greatest “discovery” in the history of the world; if he wasn’t correct, Andrew would be yet another crack pot.

We all know the outcome: Peter went on to become one of Jesus’ greatest disciples.

Peter took a chance on his brother’s testimony. He had decided that his brother just might be on to something. Again, we have the Bible to read and examine, but Peter and Andrew had neither.

They had, as Jesus would teach later, the faith of a mustard seed.
