The Mighty One, God, the Lord,
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets. Psalm 50:1

This verse sets the stage for a very interesting passage of Scripture. We get the word-picture of a Supreme Ruler summoning one of His subjects to His side. Just His words are enough for that subject to tremble before the King. The subject? The earth.

I was walking around a lake with my wife recently and stood looking out over the water and the city skyline. My comment to her was that we were very tiny compared to what we were seeing before us: billions of gallons of water, a trillion grains of sand, fishes, plant life inside the lake, and the vast heavens above. This was one small lake in one city in one state in one country. We humans are microscopic compared to the vastness of creation.

And yet.

And yet God summons the earth. It is His subject. He has authority over it.

That is the God we serve; He’s in complete control of the universe we live in.
