Desires

The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. Proverbs 13:4

The first half of the verse seems obvious, doesn’t it? If you crave something and do nothing to actually obtain it, then you will get nothing.

The second part of this verse is the direct opposite of the first, and is interesting to me. I suspect we all want to fall into this camp, those of the diligent. But before we get to thinking that diligence and busyness is the absolute key to life, it’s actually spelled out in the words “but the desires.”

If you desire to become a millionaire, yes, you must take actions that might lead towards that goal. Sitting around doing nothing will definitely net you nothing! Likewise, if you desire to be the best at anything, you must first start doing things to get you there.

Often, though, we’re not sure what we really desire so we must ask God to give us godly and worthwhile desires. At the same time, He will have equipped you to do that very thing. Match those two together and you have a satisfied life.
