All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. Acts 1:14
Jesus taught His disciples well, of course. After He left the Earth, they knew to do what they were taught. They had a lot of decisions to make and tasks to accomplish. If there was ever a time they needed wisdom, it was now.
They would have to unscramble Jesus’ words that were someone in their heads and hearts and get down to the Father’s business. The text doesn’t indicate if they prayed corporately or individually, but we do know they all prayed. They had to. They were on their own, so to speak.
Jesus was no longer there to hold their hands through each interaction and trials. Fortunately, Jesus introduced them to The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who would guide them through the next and final phase of their lives.
It is this same blessed Holy Spirit, on Whom we rely for wisdom, guidance, comfort, and assurance, to name a few characteristics.
Two thousand years have passed and we call upon the same Holy Spirit that Jesus taught them about. They needed His counsel then. We need Him even more so.
