Discerning Heart

The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. Proverbs 15:14

What does it take to have a discerning heart? Have you ever pondered that? It’s very easy to spit back what someone else has said about something without investigating further. It happens all the time in politics.

There are always at least two sides to every story. Often you won’t get a chance to hear the opposing view. Or perhaps we may not want to hear it because we may already have preconceived ideas about certain subjects.

For instance, it’s easy for those of us on the political right to ignore the plight of the homeless. We can offer a host of reasons why we don’t volunteer to help or pitch in where needed. Scripture, however, is very clear: we are to be on the side of those who are down and out. Period. It doesn’t matter how they got there. It doesn’t matter how long they’ll be there. It doesn’t even matter that they may shun our help. That’s not the point, is it?

The point today is that we believe only half of the whole story regarding, for instance, the homeless. Sometimes our politics gets in the way of our discerning heart.
