18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:18-19
Paul was using a play on words to make a point. First he instructed Timothy to warn the rich. Now he’s telling them to be rich in good deeds. Anybody can do good deeds. You don’t need to be wealthy or famous or smart or good looking. You just need to be willing.
Good deeds, of course, won’t get you into heaven but it will take your mind off of your own life and problems.
How to get started? Find some place to serve. Volunteer to do what others don’t do. There really are no shortage of opportunities to do good deeds in this life. You’ll feel better. The people you serve will appreciate it. And of course, the Lord looks favorably on people who serve and help other people. Don’t miss out on the opportunity right in front of you.
