Eclectic

Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank. Proverbs 22:29

I’ve been thinking about this very issue for some time now. You see, I dabble in a lot of things but am not an expert in any one thing. Many people are like that. We like to use the term “eclectic” or “jack of all trades; master of none.”

I do admire those who are experts in their chosen fields. I love watching mechanics analyze and fix cars; I love listening to marketers tell about their exploits in the marketplace. And of course I really admire my wife when she’s working with prosthetic patients; she’s, as they say, in the zone.

What about you? Are you eclectic with your skills and expertise or focused on one or two things? The Bible says great things about the focused, skilled worker. People take notice at the true craftsman. These craftsmen are becoming rarer and rarer. Am I suggesting we jettison our multiple set of skills for something more focused and pinpointed? No, but it probably wouldn’t hurt any of us to become great in one thing.
