Swift Judgement for Er

6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death. Genesis 38:6-7

The Bible didn’t tell us what Er did to deserve His swift judgement, but it must have been horrific because the Lord has an overabundance of patience.

I spend time wondering why this kind of death doesn’t occur more often, especially when there is egregious sin against helpless and innocent children. Yes, of course He is slow to anger and full of patience. All of that sin will be judged, just not now or not yet. But why not when the sin is so vile and heinous?

I don’t know. I wish I knew but I don’t.

His judgement will be right and perfect, but for now we wait. While we wait, we may have to pick up the pieces of destroyed lives, but God strengthens us to do just that.

I would remind you that the sin is great, yes, but the Savior is infinitely greater.
