After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.

2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Matthew 11:1-3

John the Baptist was in jail and no doubt discouraged. He had been put in prison because he rebuked Herod for divorcing his wife and taking his brother’s wife as his own (Mark 1:14). He were merely telling the world the truth but obviously the power brokers of that day didn’t care for such humiliation.

John needed to know, “is this Jesus the Promised Messiah?”

This passage clearly falls into the “don’t question in the dark what God showed you in the light” category.

Prison must have been dark and lonely for John. Even though he still had disciples of his own who could convey what was going on, he needed to know for sure.

What darkness are you experiencing now?

More importantly, what has God shown you in the light that you need to apply to this darkness? What truth about God can you cling to? What truth about His promises can you cling to?
