Haughty Eyes, Part II

There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes…Proverbs 6:17

Have you ever been right about something but realized that you had destroyed something in the process to prove it? I do this often with political discussions. I am passionate about my beliefs and often can point to Scripture and statistics to back up what I believe. Unfortunately (or fortunately), so can my opponent. In other words, there is more than one viewpoint on the issue, and each has merit. The problem comes when I begin to use personal attacks that have little or no bearing on the issue. I am trying to prove a point and will do what it takes to be right. Even if I win, so what? What have I done? Squashed someone else’s spirit. But, I argued and won, isn’t that what it’s about?

Hardly.

When do you give up in such a scenario (even if you KNOW you’re right)? When do you just “agree to disagree?” When do you just say it’s not worth losing a friend over? Only you can decide that, but once again, the Holy Spirit will be warning you along the way.
