There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes…Proverbs 6:17

The LORD hates arrogance. Guilty as charged, and all too often. Why is this so offensive to God? Arrogance is the false idea that we are better than others in our stature, in the things we say and do, in our financial well-being, in our looks, in our education, in our experiences. We quickly recognize and dislike the arrogant spirit in others, but are very slow to diagnose it in ourselves. Often others close to us must point it out before we even realize that we have been that way. After it’s been pointed out, it is up to us to deal with it.

Again, the Holy Spirit can help us in this regard. He will warn us when we’re in the dangerous territory of “haughty eyes.” Don’t dismiss that “check” in your spirit as nothing. Welcome it. Rejoice that God cares enough about us to guide us along.
