Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;
proclaim among the nations what he has done.
For he who avenges blood remembers;
he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.

Lord, see how my enemies persecute me!
Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,
that I may declare your praises
in the gates of Daughter Zion,
and there rejoice in your salvation. Psalm 9:11-14

The lesson today is close to what we’ve been talking about the last week or so but it’s pointed out clearly in verse 12: for he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.

Those tear-filled, lonely nights, he remembers.
Those dark moments when you felt like the whole world was coming against you, he remembers.
Your friends in far off lands who have been under intense scrutiny and persecution, he remembers.
Those lonely night when you’ve just wanted to up and quit, he remembers.

If there’s one thing you can say about the Lord as you read the Bible, it’s this: He has a special place in his heart for the afflicted.

(And we might even argue that when life is going great is when we need to call out to him the most since it’s easy to become complacent and self-sufficient.)

But when you’re at your lowest low, after the bottom has completely dropped out of your life, He will be right there with you.

He won’t forsake you in your hour of need. Then you will be able to say, like David, “I will declare your praises and will rejoice in your salvation.”
