Heading to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene. Matthew 2:19-23

Most people do not get specific directions like this in life.

What we’re seeing is like one of those movies where the person has multiple cameras watching a large area and tells a person to move at precise times so as to avoid detection and trouble. Having an angel of the Lord do this is much more reliable than a movie script. Most of us will never have a big picture view of our circumstances. We may get insights but nothing resembling seeing all the pieces falling together or falling apart.

Joseph obviously didn’t have that insight either but he did have the Holy Spirit guiding him for a very specific purpose – to preserve the Christ child.

Guidance from God isn’t as clear cut as some Bible teachers like to make it. As Believers God gives us a lot of latitude in our decisions. Are we being loving (John 13:34), thankful (1 Thessalonians 5:18), abstaining from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5), and being transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:1)? Pray and ask God’s wisdom in the matter.

After all that, make a decision, asking God to redirect you if it’s the wrong decision.

There is obviously more to seeking wisdom and direction than this, but God trusts us to make wise decisions when certain criteria are being met. He can and will redirect as He sees fit. He’ll close the door or open another one. Or maybe He won’t give you peace about a certain decision.
