3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand. Acts 4:3-4
Does anyone else see a bit of humor in verse three? They threw them in jail because it was evening! I understand that jail was a holding place for these two rabble-rousers so they could decide what to do with them. After all, they couldn’t just let them go, could they? Not according to them.
But even while they were in jail, people had been thinking about the message Peter and John preached and began believing. What the disciples started, no one could stop. Actually, what the Holy Spirit started, no one could stop.
It’s something to always keep in mind when ministering to people. It’s the Holy Spirit who works in and through us. It is the Holy Spirit who regenerates. It is the Holy Spirit who “pricks” the heart of an unbeliever. And it is the Holy Spirit who draws people close to God. The Holy Spirit may use us – and He does – but we have no power over someone’s life.
