How Could They?

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8

I’m certain I’ve told this story in this space before but it bears repeating. We were flying from England to the United States in what seemed like we were flying over the North Pole. I was awake and staring out the window when the Northern Lights began dancing in the sky. I had seen them numerous times in Alaska but it was the first time I had seen them in the air. I sat there in silence and amazement, then looked around at the plane. Eighty percent of the plan was asleep. Asleep. Didn’t they know what they were missing? How could they be sleeping and mist the most fabulous light show of their lives? I looked back and forth at the lights and the plane over and over again.

  • If they only knew…
  • If they only saw what I saw…
  • If they only were aware of what was going on around them…

We feel that way with the Lord sometimes. We know who and what He is and what He can do for others, but the others just don’t seem to realize their lostness, their bitterness and pain. They are totally missing out on His brilliance and wisdom.

How could they possibly be asleep at a time like this?
