He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. Proverbs 14:31
There’s an ongoing debate among conservative Christians about just how much to actually help the poor. The argument goes something like this: how much do we actually help the poor since the Government has taken that responsibility out of our hands? That side will argue that many are poor and homeless because they want to be, and that we shouldn’t subsidize slothfulness and those who don’t want to help themselves even a little.
The flip side is this: it doesn’t matter how much the Government helps the poor because the Bible says to help them.
This verse doesn’t leave much room for the first argument, does it?
