Humility

Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among his great men;
it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before his nobles. Proverbs 25:6-7

It has been said that it is much better to be humble than to be humiliated. It’s true.

Humility is often elusive and slippery. Just when you think you are, you aren’t. Most people who are would probably deny it. It all goes back to the New Testament admonition of

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-9

Now that is a standard-and-a-half to try to live up to!

Read that verse again today and pray it over your life and over the lives of your loved ones. It’s a powerful statement in a world of prideful and arrogant people.
