5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. Genesis 6:5
What an indictment on mankind! When given the choice with little to no consequences, man chose evil. I’d like to think we would be different, but it’s wishful thinking. Without God in the world, man will do what is best for himself. Even with Him in the world, we still lean that way. We struggle to do otherwise because of our sin nature. We can relate to the lyrics in the song:
Born to wander, Lord I feel it.
Born to leave the God I love.
But as Believers we do have the Holy Spirit as our helper in the broadest sense of the word. In fact, without His help, we really can’t be trusted to do what is right. I wish it were not so. I wish that we didn’t struggle with sin nature and problems in life but we do.
That’s why another well-known but old song is appropriate:
I’m learning to lean,
Learning to lean,
I’m learning to lean on Jesus
Finding more power than I’ve ever dreamed
I’m learning to lean on Jesus.
Such a simple song but powerful and meaningful words.
After all these years I’m still learning to lean.
Are you?
