Influencing Our Leaders

7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed Pharaoh, 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”

9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.” 10 Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from his presence. Genesis 47:7-10

Notice in these few verses that Jacob blessed Pharoah twice. Obviously God was blessing Pharoah’s land so that its harvest was plentiful for the upcoming years.

It’s certainly an interesting concept, being in the presence of national leaders.

I recall Chuck Colson talking about courting Evangelical leaders in the Nixon White House and they were no different than their non-Christian counterparts: they sensed the power and were easily gullible and misled by the powerful government officials. The leaders had an agenda but it wasn’t necessarily to spread the Gospel.

I recall also reading about how Billy Graham would meet and talk with political leaders all over the world. His passion, his calling in life was to preach the Gospel no matter where he was. Fortunately he was able to speak to a great many world leaders and to pray with them. They respected him for it.

Most of us do not have that kind of influence over our political leaders but we can influence them nonetheless with prayer. I don’t know how much it takes or how many people it takes but the Bible does tell us to pray for those in authority over us (1 Timothy 2:2). They have people pressuring them in every way you can imagine.

Pray. Just pray.
