Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.” John 1:50-51
We find a curious statement Jesus makes about the angels of God ascending and descending on Him, the Son of Man. It’s most probably a reference to the story of Jacob and the ladder/stairway in Genesis 28:12-17. Verse 12 is the key verse: “He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.”
Jesus was the fulfillment of that dream. In the Book of John, Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:51); the Way, Truth and Life (John 14:6); light of the world (John 8:12); the door (John 10:9): the Good Shepherd (John 10:11); the resurrection and life (John 11:25); true vine (John 15:1); and the most powerful of them all, I AM (John 8:58). While He didn’t specifically say it, He still is the stairway that reaches to heaven. We can only get to heaven through Him. He has bridged the chasm between Heaven and Earth.
