There’s a law in Texas (or perhaps it’s merely a solid tradition) that wealthier communities will give to poorer communities throughout the State. The State applies principle of giving to the less fortunate.
When Paul wrote this, Corinth was a fairly robust city but Jerusalem was poor. It’s quite probable the churches were similar in status. Paul wanted to make sure that the poorer churches were taken care of as well.
Sometimes while wanting to help the Church overseas, we overlook and neglect those close by. There are ministries right now in your town that need your support. It doesn’t have to be a group or church effort, but it could be. Ask to volunteer there to do whatever they need. They don’t get that kind of help often and they would greatly appreciate it.
