Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Buy the truth and do not sell it — wisdom, instruction and insight as well.
The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.
May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful! Proverbs 23:22-25
Godly wisdom from those who are older is priceless. Just yesterday I heard an older gentleman give one nugget of truth that still resonates with me. He said that each day he struggles to see Jesus. He struggles because of the things the world puts in our paths. Sometimes his own desires get in the way of our view of Him. It’s a daily struggle.
Coming from a man in his 80s, that’s like gold. Why? Because he’s not sugar-coating the truth. He’s not saying that once you turn your life over to Christ, you should just go from glory to glory. No, he’s saying that it’s a daily struggle to see Jesus. That’s encourages me because it’s true and I’m not alone in my thinking about it.
My takeaway is this: don’t dismiss the words spoken by the elderly. They may not always be up on the times technology but the truths they speak are timeless.
