The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them. John 12:34-36
The Light of the World was giving a clear teaching about darkness and light. I’m not sure the Disciples understood the significance of the words just yet but they would eventually. A lot was being thrown at them in a short period of time, and they needed serious time to process it, so Jesus left them to talk it over among themselves.
Becoming children of light is an important step in our journey through life. Being children of light each day is equally important because, as it’s been said as a cliche, “we are the only Bible people will ever read.” Hopefully our light illuminates the darkness wherever we go. Our light doesn’t judge the darkness, it just shines light on dark deeds.
