Light of All Mankind

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:4-5

Have you ever been in pitch black darkness even after you think your eyes have adjusted. You long for light, any light will do.

Or perhaps the electricity goes out and you go searching for candles in the darkness. You stumble and feel around for things until you find the candles and light them.

We don’t appreciate the light until we don’t have it any longer. Then we stumble until we find it.

As The Light of the World, Jesus shines his truth into the darkness.

That darkness is the world, of course.

But it can also be our hearts as well, areas we’d rather not discuss even as believers.

Recall Robert Munger’s book, My Heart, Christ’s Home where he discusses doors into our lives we’d rather not share with anybody.

And so it’s fitting that He be allowed to shine His light into those places as well. He sees them and knows about them anyhow, so why do we hide them?

In Heaven, there will be no darkness. Revelations 22:5 tells us

There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

Glory to the One Who is the Light of the World!
