Lizard Wisdom

“Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise:
Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;
hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags;
locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks;
a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces. Proverbs 30:24-28

The Proverbs writer tells us about four simple creatures that are wise despite their smallness. The wisdom that those creatures have is innate. They did nothing to earn it. It was “hard-wired” into them. The Lord gave them that wisdom.

Our wisdom doesn’t come from our intellect or reasoning power. It comes from God. He gives it to the willing. We do nothing to earn it though we can (and should) pray for it. It’s not hard-wired into us. It’s trial and error for many of us.

Still, though, we can learn from these small creatures. For them, it’s “survival of the fittest” or each man for himself. For us, well, we make things much too complicated.

Pray that we would have the wisdom of a lizard or a locust or that of an ant.
