18 Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies. Psalm 73:18-20
Asaph continues to describe the fate of those who are arrogant and Godless. He understands it now even more so because he’s probably seen them on their death beds, questioning their existence, hoping for a better life to come, yet realizing they had all that life had to offer them but still were empty.
He saw those kinds of people because people really don’t change. We see the emptiness and futility of people going after riches today. Hollywood provides us with a great insight into people who have it all (looks, fame, fortunes) but are empty (with a few exceptions). Yet thousands of magazine and newspaper articles and dozens of television shows still tout the Hollywood lifestyle.
God is not impressed with their fame and fortunes. He is not impressed with their impassioned lobbying for unlimited abortion (in the name of “choice”). He is certainly not impressed by their anti-God spews of hatred masquerading as full feature films.
God still has incredible mercy and is not willing that any should perish. I’ve “picked on” Hollywood for the moment, but we all know people who are like this but are not famous.
Pray for their souls. Pray that God would continue to have mercy on them.
Perhaps you will be the only Christian influence in this person’s life. Perhaps He may have you share your story with them. Perhaps.
