Of Callouses and Correction

He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. Proverbs 10:17

The second half to this verse is interesting. When you work in a yard after working at a desk for years, it’s easy to get blisters on your hands if you aren’t wearing gloves. If you do this for weeks at a time, your blisters turn into callouses. At a point you no longer feel pain where your blisters were because the callouses are there. In fact, I’ve known people to have callouses upon their callouses!

This verse speaks to those blisters and callouses. You receive correction by the Word of God or through others and it’s annoying and needs attention, but after a while, you become numb to the pain of being corrected. You don’t feel the pain anymore and you’re happy with that. You are ignoring that correction. The next step is that you begin leading others astray. How does that look exactly? It could be through doctrine; it could be through philosophy, or it could even be through attitude.

Ignoring correction is not a good thing. It’s probably more subtle than we know. Pray that you will recognize correction.
