26 “Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Acts 13:26-27
Even though the religious rulers didn’t recognize Jesus, they fulfilled a crucial role throughout the Bible: they fulfilled Scripture. They didn’t know they were fulfilling it, but they fulfilled it nonetheless. How important was that really? Well, when you consider how old the Bible is and how many different authors wrote it, it brings new light into the discussion. For instance, how could David know that Jesus’ bones would NOT be broken when the vast majority of crucifixions resulted in soldiers breaking the legs to speed up the dying process? And crucifixion was a Roman punishment that David would not have known about.
Despite their knowledge of Scripture, the Jewish rulers then played right into God’s hand. He foretold these events, and the leaders carried them out. Did it ever dawn on them how they were being used by God Almighty for His purposes? Did they ever have an “Aha!” moment where the separate pieces of the puzzle all came together?
I’m happy to report that God is still in control and active in the affairs of man across the globe. Nothing escapes his notice. And nothing will ultimately go unjudged.
Rest easy because He’s still on the throne.
