On The Other Side

A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil. Proverbs 13:19

That longing we each have in our spirits continues to cry out until it actually is fulfilled. We know – partly because we’ve read about it and partly because, well, we just know – that something else awaits us at the end of this life. Sometimes it’s muted and smoldering. Scripture gives us glimpses of what that something is, but it’s just that, glimpses. We try to compare it to what we know here on earth but can’t because it seems distant and out of reach.

For example:

  • Streets of purest gold – what does it mean to us and what is its significance actually? Of course we know what gold is and how it plays in the world, but entire streets of it?
  • Saints worshipping night and day – we find it hard to understand since we worship the King for an hour or two each week.
  • No darkness – we certainly cannot grasp this since we see darkness around us in many forms. No darkness at all? Seems incredible to us.

Sometimes it’s just as important for God to grant us that longing, to help us want to ponder those questions. Often we are so focused on earth that we forget that something much more fabulous awaits us.
