12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. 1 Corinthians 12:12
Paul went to great lengths to explain principles we are already familiar with. But he did it for a reason: because obviously the body parts were proclaiming their importance over other parts.
The other day I read a short article about how the fancy marketers want us all to be greatest, number one, and the best of the best. But the vast majority of us will be average. Sure we can be excellent in the things we say and do but we are still average. The article wasn’t an insult at what we face but a cold reality.
We need the gifts we all bring to the arena. No one can be the Head because we already have our Head, Jesus Christ. All the other body parts are up for grabs. None is more important than the other. In our quest to be the best in our society, it’s a hard lesson to learn.
