Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned — Romans 5:12
Scripture tells us that sin came through Adam. Very few people claim to be without sin in the Western world. They may say they aren’t as bad as the murderer or rapist or embezzler, but overall he’s done good. After all, he argues the good things he has done will outweigh the bad things. When you ask where it’s written down that this is the standard, there really is no coherent response.
You see, we live in a desperately fallen world, and things seem to be going downhill fast. The standard we have is the Word of God. The Word states that we all sinned and that sin ultimately leads to death.
Fortunately we have Good News, perhaps the best news that the media could ever flash upon a screen. But before we get to the Good News we really need to solidify the fact that we are sinners. Even as Believers, we are sinners. We can’t deny it, excuse it, or pretend otherwise. When we begin to think we don’t or can’t sin anymore, we’re in serious trouble.
But this really isn’t about how bad we are but how desperate we should be. In the next few days we’ll continue to discover the sad state we were in.
