Our Friends Priscilla and Aquila

Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Romans 16:3-4

We’re not exactly sure what Priscilla and Aquila did to risk their lives, but Paul mentions them in this final chapter. If you’re fortunate enough, you will meet those who are like Priscilla and Aquila, those who serve you under very difficult circumstances, and yes, those who will risk their lives on your behalf. Modern day examples might be pastors and church leaders who go to prison to protect the identities of their parishioners.

But here’s a sobering question: do you love the people in your church enough to risk your life for them? I think for most of us, the answer would be no, and for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons I can think of is that we really don’t know many within the church walls to make such a bold commitment. Our family, yes. Our very very close friends, yes. But the pew-sitter two pews over and across? Probably not.

Today as you consider these words, consider also those who are being persecuted for their faith. I just read that at least ten Nigerians were slaughtered over the weekend. Pray for the church in Nigeria. It doesn’t get a lot of news air time but it’s a troubled place to live as a Christian. Pray that God will move mightily in that land.
