Our Motives

A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare. Proverbs 21:6

Once again the theme of dishonesty appears. It speaks to the heart of our character. But you have to step back and ask, “why?”

Why does the Bible speak so clearly about dishonesty and gains made because of it? Think about why people lie. They lie to get ahead. They lie because they don’t want to get into trouble for something they have done. They lie to cover up something. It’s all about us. It’s rarely about the other person.

Motives are all important to the LORD. We must constantly be examining our motives because, as we learned in Proverbs 16:2, “All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD.” Our motives for lying may not be as innocent as might think.
