44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. Matthew 13:44-45
At first glance it would be easy to criticize the man who found the treasure and fine pearls. Why didn’t he tell everyone he could about what he found?
That’s not the point of the parables. The point is that he would sacrifice everything to obtain those great findings. Later he could celebrate and tell his friends and family of his great fortune, but he has to do what he can to get it.
This parable probably resonated with the disciples. King Solomon wrote about searching for wisdom as searching for silver: Proverbs 2:2-5
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
As Jesus told them these parables, they probably started to understand that He was the great treasure they were searching for.
Their search was finally over!
However, they would still have to sacrifice all for His sake. They would get the prize, but it would come at a great cost.
We truly have a great treasure in Jesus Christ.
Many reading this have given up much for His sake and they will certainly be rewarded.
Many have been persecuted for His sake, and they certainly will be rewarded.
And of course, many have given their lives for His sake. Their reward is Him.
Read these two related parables again and ask God to speak to you through them. Only He knows what’s in store for you as you do.
