From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied. Proverbs 18:20
A continuing theme throughout the book of Proverbs is the tongue. Some of us spend our entire lives and don’t quite understand how to use our tongues wisely. As the Bible states elsewhere (next verse), our tongue has the power to lift up and the power to destroy, the power of life and death. More often than not we destroy with it.
Let me make a bold statement: we owe it to others to build them up, and here’s why. Too many of us are beaten down by the cares of the world and the critical negativity that the World throws our way. Our beliefs and views are maligned or criticized; our opinions are sneered at.
We need encouragement. We need to be lifted up. We need a tender, encouraging tongue to help us. It doesn’t take much but it takes deliberate effort.
Encourage someone today. It could make a great difference in that person’s life. And, as this verse tells us, you will be satisfied for doing it.
