5 The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
6 At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still. Psalm 76:5-6
Asaph was referring to the “valiant” among the wicked, as verse six implies. These words are the lyrics to a song. It’s as if the conqueror is standing over those valiant warriors, mocking them and cheering for God.
I am reminded of a song I learned many years ago:
I will sing unto the LORD,
for he has triumphed gloriously,
the horse and rider thrown into the sea.I will sing unto the LORD,
for he has triumphed gloriously,
the horse and rider thrown into the sea.The LORD, my God, my strength and song,
has now become my victory.
The LORD, my God, my strength and song,
has now become my victory. The LORD is God, and I will praise him,
our covenant God, and I will exalt him.
The LORD is God, and I will praise him,
our covenant God, and I will exalt him.
He’s triumphed over much more than the horse and rider. He’s triumphed over death itself. . . for us.
Now that’s something to praise Him for.
