The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. Proverbs 10:29
This week there was a massive storm in my town. For more than an hour the rain came down hard and the wind was strong. I sat at the top of our outside stairs and watched as the trees swayed and the earth absorbed as much as it could the water. Still, even fifteen feet in from the rain I got moist because the wind blew it towards me. Not soaking wet, mind you, but wet nonetheless. But I was protected from the heavy rain and wind.
My refuge from the storm was inside my apartment looking out. That’s the way it should be with the Lord. He is just that kind of refuge for us. The “world” seeks to soak us and make us swerve under its “wind,” but we have a refuge, a mighty refuge in the midst of a storm. Why we don’t make good use of that refuge more often is still a mystery to me. Is it fear? Is it pride? Or perhaps we just need to be reminded to go there.
