“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:9-12

The command “remain in my love” is a byproduct of other commands, namely to keep His commands. This begs the question, what are his commands? Fortunately He answers it in verse twelve: love each other as I have loved you. Interestingly enough, Jesus kept that same command (loving others) in obedience to the Father.

The Christian lifestyle after conversion is this: Love God; love others. If we love God we should be loving others. If we are not loving others, then are we loving God?

Here’s what loving others will not look like: gossiping about them, belittling them, cursing them, slandering them, and a whole host of other verbs we know we shouldn’t be doing.

Instead, here is what loving others should look like: encouraging them, being patient with them, being kind to them, being gentle with them, and just being a friend when they need it.

Of course the second list is much more difficult to do because it requires a concerted effort. It is, however, the way to “remain in His love.”
